HARE
SCRAMBLES
101
Hare Scrambles are the closest type of off-road racing you can get to motocross. In a hare scramble you will line up with your designated class you signed up in, alongside all of the other racers. You will then be staggered with other classes in a specific order and then start the race one minute apart. Hare Scrambles will either have a dead engine start or a live engine start, in which both will be started with a flag wave. Once the green flag has waved you will then be bar to bar with your fellow racers for a certain amount of time. These events can be ran from one hour in length all the way up to three hours in length, you will rarely see a hare scramble exceed the three hour time span. You will then race among a closed course varying from 5-12 miles in length. You will race for as many laps you can get in within the time the race is held. Within the race time you will encounter many different obstacles between sand whoops, rocks, logs, and more. If you are racing in the designated program with your PRO or AA riders there is a possibility you will go a lap down to those riders. If caught by these riders be courteous and pull off to the side of the race track to let them pass. This applies to other riders who have started in the class behind you as well. A dot on the number plate or on the back of the helmet will help you indicate whether the rider is in your class or not. Some race series will use a letter to differentiate classes as well. You will race up until you get a checkered flag and will be given awards and points based on what riders did the most laps and who crossed the checkered flag first.
